Recipes from Granny Caldwell

When anyone mentions recipes and Granny in the same breath, they mention apple crisp. One cousin told me the following story about apple crisp in his family.

The origin of that recipe for our family is an interesting story.  As Mother related it to me, when Papa (as we spell it) had electricity installed and bought Granny a stove, Alabama Power would not turn on the power until a Home Demonstration Agent came out to show Granny how to use the stove.  She arrived in time to help Granny fix dinner.  They killed and prepared chicken, probably with potatoes, biscuits and whatever vegetables were available.  (Canned green beans if there were no fresh vegetables.)  For dessert, the Agent showed Granny how to fix the apple crisp from canned (I think that the preferred brand is Comstock) apples.  Mother fixed it frequently and gave us the recipe years ago.

Another recipe that I will send is the one that we call “Granny Caldwell’s Brownies”.  One of the strong memories that I have of visiting Granny and Papa, is the brownies wrapped in waxed paper that Granny put in her cookie jar a couple of days before we were to arrive.  There was something very special about those brownies that had “aged” for a couple of days in the waxed paper.
