The Payne family moved from Alabama to Texas to Oklahoma and finally back to Alabama during the early part of the twentieth century. There is not a lot of information available about the family, but here is what I have.
I would love to hear more.

Descendants of William C. Payne
Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM C.2 PAYNE (CHESLEY1) was born Abt. 1780 in Virginia, and died 25 Dec 1851 in Rock Spring,
Walker County, Georgia. He married SARAH MANAS 24 Apr 1803 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, daughter of
JACOB MANAS and MARGARET. She was born Abt. 1787 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1870 in Rock Spring, Walker
County, Georgia.
Notes for WILLIAM C. PAYNE:
1828-RESIDENCES: GREENE CO TN COURT OF PLEAS 1828 (FHL Film #5633-4, has following mention of
Payne:
p 1; William Payne, George Frazier, John Frazier, received deed to Methodist Episcopal Church as trustees 14
Oct 1829;
p 85; Land owner 1829, Lick Creek;
p 100; Land owner, Lick Creek;
p 101; Land owner, Lick Creek;
p 243; At the execution of a Deed from Henry Payne to Jesse Payne, Jr., 5 Feb 1828, 18 acres, William Payne
made oath to prove deed, and also that by law, Elizah (Elijah?) Yeager (now removed) subscribes his name as a
witness thereto;
p 451; Riley Payne (son of William Payne) was witness 1831;
p 497; Plat from Silas Hodges #930.
George Payne Decedent 6/Apr/1787 Payne, George, 6 Apr. 1787; 26 Jan. 1790. Bro. Richard decd.; sons
William, George, John and Richard; daus. Jane Kelly and Mary Morris 2 negroes each; bro. Daniel Payne.
The 1830 census index for Hawkins County, Tennessee lists Paynes: PAYNE 31-32-74. The 1840 census index:
PAYNE 202-225-226. The 1850 census index: PAYNE 310A-348A-349A
In the 1850 census, on the continuation page, Eliza J. Frazer, aged 19, born in Tennessee, is listed as a member of
the household. She could be Eilzabeth Frazier, who marries William Coffman Payne, the son of William. The
next household is a whole list of young Frazers, in a household led by Annie Frazer, age 41 (the same age our
Elizabeth would be). So, the census record is not clear. These look like they are siblings of Elizabeth who are all
living together, probably with Elizabeth. The question is whether they are living in William Payne's home or in
the next home. However, Elizabeth who married William Coffman Payne is 41 in 1850, so we don't know who
this Frazer is or how they are related. The children are William, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, John, Thomas, ages 15,
13, 9, 7, 5, 3. Did the census taker mix up Elizabeth and Anny? Is this our Elizabeth, who is really 41 or some
relative or hers? This gets more interesting because two families down the list is Riley Payne, who married Sarah
Frazier, who was born in about 1804. Next is Elijah Payne, who appears to be a brother There appear to be a lot
of connections.
