The Israel family is interesting in a number of ways. Solomon Israel, the patriarch of the family in America, is believed to have come here from Amsterdam. It is likely that he gave his name as Solomon ben Israel when he arrived, meaning, "I am named Solomon and I am Jewish." As happened to many people who came to this country, either his name was changed by the immigration officials or he changed it himself, so he became simply Solomon Israel. In a time when people were not particularly literate and the spoken word was more important than the written word, a lot of strange things happened to names.
In his younger days, Solomon was married in St. George Episcopal Church, Nassau or Hempstead, New York, giving rise to a rumor that he really wasn't Jewish after all. This became a raging debate among genealogists on the internet, with many declaring that he was not Jewish. My mother was equally firm that her Grandma Israel was Jewish. So, I researched this.
I found Michael Israel, son of Solomon, moving to Albemarle County, Virginia in about 1758, when he obtained a land grant. Separately, I found a historical record of the first synagogue in Charlottesville, the nearest settlement to Michael's home in Albemarle County. I found the name of the current rabbi of that congregation and wrote an email. He returned my email almost immediately, with a reference to a document that described the early history of Judaism in Albermarle County. In that document, Michael and Sarah Israel are credited as being the earliest Jewish settlers. So, my mother's account is proven to be probably true. It could be that the compilers of the document were not accurate, but the document is from the University of Virginia and is accepted as a scholarly work, so that seems unlikely.
The Israels also bring us the connection to Thomas Graves of Jamestown, through his son Francis.
On the Friday after Thanksigiving 2004, my brother and I stood on the land that Michael Israel owned in 1779 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, where the Yadkin River and Warrior Creek come together. In looking for that land, we found ourselves standing on land across the Yadkin River from the site we eventually determined was correct. I later learned that land across the river (now a park) was owned by Wheelers at the same time in history. The Israel land sweeps up from the river on a relatively gentle slope (for that part of the country), then opens into high meadows. Finally, there is a ridge along the top of the land, with a commanding view in all directions. As we came over that ridge, my brother and I both experienced a strange, strong feeling. I felt a ripple of current go down my arms such as I have never felt before. We had been driving around all over the area, but at that moment, both of us were convinced we were in the right place. While I have pooh-poohed such feelings in the past, I never will again.
Finally, the Israels followed the same paths of migration as the Wheelers and the Caldwells. These families have been living as neighbors (sometimes closer than others) for over 200 years.

Descendants of Solomon Israel
Generation No. 1
1. SOLOMON1 ISRAEL1,2,3 was born Bet. 1710 - 1717 in Amsterdam, Holland, and died Abt. 1790 in Wilkes
County, North Carolina. He married MARY JOHNSTON 29 Jun 1733 in St. George Episcopal Church, Nassau or
Hempstead, New York. She was born Abt. 1720, and died Unknown.
Notes for SOLOMON ISRAEL:
In the 1790 census district, Solomon Israel lived near Coffey's, who later became relatives when Sarah Coffey
married Michael Israel.. Michael, Johnson and Tilpe israel lived nearby as well. The Alloways and the
Eppoersons were also neighbors. Children of these families married.
From a web posting:
My ancestor, Solomon Israel, was born circa 1710 at Hempstead, Queens County, NY. He married Mary
Johnston 29 Jun 1734 in St. George Episcopal Church, Hempstead, NY. They had at least three children: Eleanor
[my ancestor], Michael, and Jesse Israel. Solomon moved his family south to Albemarle Co, VA. where his son,
Jesse, served in a VA unit in the Rev. War. They moved on south to Wilkes County, NC, where Solomon was
listed in the 1790 census. Solomon may have lived in Buncombe County, NC, before going to Wilkes County

2. MICHAEL2 ISRAEL (SOLOMON1) was born Abt. 1736 in Hempstead, Queens, New York, and died Apr 1820 in
Avery's Creek Buncombe County, North Carolina. He married SARAH GRAVES 1754 in Albemarle County,

In 1757, he was a border ranger, defending the frontier of Virginia during the French Indian War. (He is a
contemporary of George Washington, born about 4 years after Washington.) For that service, he recieved 16
shillings.
According to WadeSmith.org: Michael Israel was a Revolutionary War soldier fighting at the Battle of King's
Mountain. Proof of this comes from William Carter's Revolutionary War declaration of Virginia.
The land he purchased in 1779 was in the North Garden near Stockton's Thoroughfare, which is a conspicuous
pass through the mountains between North Garden and Batesville. This pass was later known as Israel's Gap, and
is south of Israel Mountain. There is some disconnect of this date and the date he bought land in Wilkes County,
North Carolina near the Burke County line (1778). The land he purchased in North Carolina became a part of
Caldwell County when it was formed in 1841.
In Wilkes County, his children were born and grew up, marrying children of nearby families. As they became
adults and married, most of them moved to Buncombe County, North Carolina, closer to Ashville. (Mary moved
to Franklin County, Georgia.)
In 1805 or 1806 Michael Israel sold his land in Wilkes County, North Carolina. On June 3, 1806, he bought 480
acres on both sides of Avery's Creek where it joins the French Broad River. He and his wife Sarah were to live on
this land until Michael Israel died intestate in 1819 or early 1820. Sarah was to live a few more years. She died
about 1823 or 1824.
The Avery Creek post office was 68 miles from Greenville, Tennessee.
There is debate as to whether the family was Jewish or not, fueled by father Solomon's marraige in an Episcopal
Church. On the website for Congregation Beth Israel in Charlottesville, Virginia, there is a copy of a document
called "To Seek the Peace of the City." It was prepared for an exhibit about the history of Jewish settlers in the
Charlottesville area. That document credits Michael and Sarah as the first Jewish settlers in Albemarle County,
Virginia, moving there in 1757. It also has specimens of Michael Israel's signature and Sarah's "mark."
In the 1790 census for Wilkes County, North Carolina, there is a Jos Israel with 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16
and 7 females. I cannot account for this family.

On this twelfth day of November in the year 1832 personally apeared in open court before Israel Watts, the judge
of the Probate Court of Johnson County, now sitting, John Israel a resident of Franklin County Township in said
county, and state, age sixty seven years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the
following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7, 1832.
That he was drafted into the service of the United States, in May in the year 1781, under the command of Colonel
Isaacs, and Nathan Gordon, who performed the duties of major, tho, he was not as this defendant believes
commissioned; and these being the only field officers belonging to said regiment or detachment it not being a full
regiment; -- Captain Pendleton Isbel, Lieutentant Mitchel and Ensign Foster, were the officers of the company to
which this declarant belonged; -- That at the time of entering the service as aforesaid; -- and from there marched
through the counties of Surry, Roan, Guilford, Orange, and Randolph, and was stationed for some time in the last
named county; -- That this expedition was got up for the purpose of Suppressing the Tories who, at that time,
were very numerous in that part of the state; -- That while stationed at the County of Randolph as aforesaid,
General Lee, being on his march to the south encamped his troops within sight of the encampment of the troops to
which this declarant belonged, and remained in such encampment for the space of one day and night; -- That this
engagement of service being only for three months at the end of that period from enlistment as aforesaid, he was
discharged and returned home.
This defendant also in the month of September in the year 1781 entered into the service of the United States as a
5
volunteer, under the command of Colonel Benjamin Harrington, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph McDaniel, and Major
McDonald; the company officers under whom this defendent served were Captain John Beaverly, Lieutenant
Elias Millburn [or Willburn], and Ensign Samuel Millburn [or Willburn] (this declarant still being a resident of
Wilkes County, North
Carolina); and from there into Cherokee Indian country on the Tennessee River; That this expedition was under
the command of General Charles McDaniel with whom the declarant
was intaimately acquainted; -- That after a service of three months under this engagement this declarant was
regularly discharged and returned home.
This defendant, also in February in the year 1782, entered the service of the United States as a volunteer, in a
light horse of rangers, under the command of Captain Finnezee, Lieutenant Miller and Ensign or Colonel
Gatewood, (still being a resident of Wilkes County, North Carolina).
That after enlistment this declarant and the company to which he belonged marched from the county, he then
believes he resided in Wilkes, through Burke and Rutherford in the state of North Carolina; and from thence to
Franklin in the State of Georgia, the names of the intermediate counties between the two last named are forgotten;
-- That on arriving at Franklin County in the State of Georgia as aforesaid, this declarant and the company to
which he belonged were stationed there for something above three months, at the expiration of which time this
declarant was discharged. That this descharge as well as those which he previously received he has since lost by
inattention to their preservation, never having expected to be able to avail himself of the benefit of them until the
passage of the late act of Congress.
This declarant hath no documentary evidence of his service and knows of no person whose testimony he can
procure to testify for him. He hereby relinquishes every claim to a persion or bounty except this present and he
declares that his name is not on the agency of any state.
And in answer to the interrogators here and propounded unto him by the Court this declarant saith:
1. That he was born in Albermarle County in the State of Virginia in the year 1765, as he is informed and
believes.
2. That he hath no record of his age.
3. That when called into the service of the United States he was a resident of Wilkes County, North Carolina
where he resided until the year 1811, when he removed to Butler County, Ohio where he remained until the year
1821, when he removed to Johnson County, Indiana, where he now lives.
4. That for the first engagement of service he was drafted and for second and third he was a volunteer.
5. There were no regular officers with the troops with whom he served.

Joseph H. Caldwell, 1853-1918, which is at variance from his date of birth in other places.
He was found by some to be peculiar. If there was a singing school, we had to be there. He liked to hunt and
fish, but sometimes would pout for a week without Grandma knowing why. Told by Martha Jane Caldwell
Payne, his daughter, to Weldon.
From handwrtten notes provided by Weldon to Linda Smith Williams (quoting Jenny Payne): Aunt Jennie
remembers being with him the day he died at home, near Locust Grove, Oklahoma. He had "leakage of the
heart." On the morning of July 20, while she and Grandma Caldwell were with him, two neighbor men stopped.
One saw that J.H. couldn't last long and stayed with him. At 11:00 a.m., Joseph Harley looked at the clock and
said " I have about one hour left." Mama says that he died at exactly 12 noon.

AMANDA LOVETT. He was born 11 Nov 1867, and died 13 Feb 1956 in Jefferson County, Alabama.
Notes for MARY MELISSA CALDWELL:
According to Weldon and to Linda Williams , Mary ran off at 14 to marry Alf Shoemaker. They were in
Alabama when the Caldwells moved to Oklahoma, but moved later that year. MV Payne said Alf "could lay off
the straightest cotton rows of anybody I ever saw." Ruby Smith told Linda Williams this story.
Another family researcher has her date of death as 11 Mar 1971

32. BENJAMIN ALEXANDER7 CALDWELL (MARY JANE6 ISRAEL, LEANDER W.5, JAMES M. ISRAEL4 SR., MICHAEL3
ISRAEL, MICHAEL2, SOLOMON1)67 was born 26 Jan 1878 in Jefferson County, Alabama, and died 25 Jan 1953 in
Jefferson County, Alabama. He married JULIA IDA WHEELER 1900 in Jefferson County, Alabama, daughter of
ANDREW WHEELER and MARY JONES. She was born 24 Jun 1878 in Jackson County, Alabama, and died 03 Aug
1959 in West End Hospital, Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama68.
Notes for BENJAMIN ALEXANDER CALDWELL:
Jenny Payne says he was buried on his 75th birthday.
He married Julia Ida Wheeler before the Caldwells moved to Oklahoma. Ben and Julie rented a house near the
family, who were living in the "McNair Place," a big two-story house (with pecan groves) owned by an Indian
family named McNair. (Jenny Payne, as related to Weldon ).
In the 1900 census, Benjamin and Juie live alone (without kids), between the Goolsbys and the Spencers. A short
distance away there are Rufus Nicholson, his wife, Rufus Linus Nicholson, and Walter Hugh Nicholson and his
family. This is not the house where they lived when their grandchildren were growing up. This house was on
Pleasant Grove Road, about 3 miles away toward Edgewater. Eventually, after they moved from the house, Ben's
brother Jim and his wife Carrie moved there. The Paynes moved into the house across the road when they came
back from Texas and Oklahoma.
23
In the 1910 census, the following families live all in a row:
Andrew and Mary Angeline Wheeler
Richard J. and Jennie Wheeler
Kate Wheeler Glasgow and Bascom Glasgow
Frank C. and Retha Anthony Wheeler
Joseph A. and Bessie Wheeler
He should have been back in Alabama for the 1920 census, but I can't find a record of it. He had a child born in
Alabama in 1915, so he should have been in Alabama rather than Oklahoma in 1920.
The 1930 census has Ben and Julia with son Jim and daughter Alice in Jefferson County, Alabama. Richard
Jones Wheeler is listed just before Ben and Julia. Joseph Andrew Wheeler lives nearby on that same side.
Walter Goolsby lives on the other side, then James Goolsby, then John and Nora Anthony. Ben owns his home,
which is worth $6,000. He is a carpenter for a coal and iron company. He is not a veteran. These census pages
do not list the name of the road or the house numbers.

Occupation: Carpenter, doing construction work for Tennessee Coal and Iron on their company houses. He could
fix a toof, paint, fix a wall or whatever needed doing. He worked in Edgewater just before he retired.
Notes for JULIA IDA WHEELER:
She said that when they were in Oklahoma, the wind blew so strong that it blew the plants away as fast as they
could plant crops. She said people went crazy from the wind and its damage.
Her grand-daughter says: She did what all the pioneer women did. She sewed, kept house, kept a garden, and
cooked. Her grand-daughter says that she had such an imagination about cooking. She knew how to take
whatever was in the house and make a meal. If it was almost grocery day and stores were low, she could still
figure out a good meal. When everyone was starving and she needed a quick meal, she would fry fatback, then
cook sauerkraut in that same pan. She'd cook a pan of cornbread while it was cooking, then put that out for lunch
with buttermilk and home-made jelly. (Her grand-daughter Julia Minerva was good at that too.) She sang
"Bringing In The Sheaves" while she mopped the kitchen floor.
Her great-granddaughter says: I remember her Folgers Coffee can. It sat next to her chair. I guess she dipped
snuff and spat into the can. As a child this fascinated me! I remember her as a kind woman who appeared in my
life every once in a while and then disappeared. I am gateful to my mother for taking the time to write about her
so we would all know something about her.

Notes for IDA LOIS CALDWELL:
Lois went to college and worked various jobs in the Baptist church. In 1946, she was a secretary at
Calvary Baptist Church in Clearwater, Florida, after her husband Sam died. Her niece says she
mostly "did what Baptist preachers' wives did." She did not have children.
She married her husbands in this order. Each died. All were Southern Baptist ministers.

Robert Wright
Thomas Swearington
In about 1940, her family visited her in Clearwater for two weeks: Alyce and her kids, Elizabeth and
her kids and Granny and Popa and Linda Smith. They traveled in Popa's car and Elizabeth's car.
(Alyce did not drive.) There is a picture of all the kids on a dock on Lake Tarpon, which was called
Lake Butler then. They stayed in a 2 bedroom cabin, which had a kitchen. There was a beach
along the lake, sandy and nice. If there were the alligators that inhabited Lake Tarpon later, they
did not know about it. To go to the beach, they had to go to Alternate 19, then across the
causeway to the beach. The causeway was originally built by WPA workers in the 1930s and was
a construction marvel. They picked oranges in an orange grove, then went to Tarpon Springs and
went out on the sponge boat. Her niece Linda remembers the diver putting on his gear to dive for
sponges. The kids would get up in the morning and put on their bathing suits and stay in them all
day long. Every afternoon they went to the beach. One afternoon they visited Calvary Baptist
Church, where she worked and saw the dome, which is beautiful. They visited her at the Gray
Moss Inn in downtown Clearwater, where she lived. She had an apartment on the second floor
that opened onto a veranda. (That has been torn down in the late 1990s and is now a parking lot
for the Scientologists' conference center.)
Earlier in the summer, Linda went home with Alyce from a visit to Birmingham. Alyce returned to
Lanette on the train and Linda went to help her keep her children in order. Since Linda was in
Lanette, she was included in the trip to Clearwater, then returned home to Birmingham with her
grandparents.

She was buried on her wedding anniversary, having outlived her husband by 36 years.

grand-daughter Linda Rae was 3, she had dysentery while she was away visiting with Ruby. Ruby
sat in the hospital with her, crocheted and fed her 7-up and jello. She grew flowers, both plain and
unusual. People would come by and see her flowers and she would pick a bouquet for them. She
made many, many, rag dolls, long and skinny, all sewn by hand. They could go in the washing
machine and dryer and come out and be loved some more. She made completely hand-sewn
quilts, then made potholders from the scraps. Everyone in the family used her potholders.
Everyone thinks of her when they see a pansy. She always said the kids could pick all the pansies
they wanted. Pansies were fair game.
Her grand-daughter says: Granny Rube taught me to crochet, sew by hand and pick flowers
properly. In my garden now I have all sorts of flowers that remind me of her: pansies, peonies,
columbines, and coral bells. My most vivid memory of her is watching her kill a diamond back
rattler with a hoe when she was about 58 years old. My most vivid memory of her house in Lynn
Haven, Florida, was some asparagus my mother picked and cooked for me there one spring. It
was the best asparagus I ever ate. I loved her quilts and I always sewed, but I thought I could
NEVER make a quilt like she could. One day, when I was in my late thirties, I saw a quilt made of
old blue jeans and tied with red yarn. It was so ugly. I knew I could do better than that, so I started
making quilts and enjoying every minute of it. I am proud to say that I have a copy of her rag doll
pattern.
Her son says that she did not sell flowers until later in life. She always said, "Flowers shoudl be
given away" and gave away a fortune in them. She also made those rag dolls complete in every
detail with panties, petticoats, socks. His wife has one with small glasses made of small copper
wire and once tried to get her to make one using some of his sister's red hair. Granny Rube made
one of cotton yarn that looked like her daughter's hair instead. if you have one of hers notice the
small stitches, handmade like they were machine made. EVERY baby as far back as I can
remember, got a stuffed crochet multi color ball (and I think Nell still has one of our kids ball) Nell
still treats some of those rag dolls like they were gold.

Florida Death Index 1877-1998 Name: Emmet M. Smith Place: Columbia Gender: M Race: W
Volume: 1393 Certificate: 2497 Death Date: 1950 (He was at the Veterans Hospital in Lake City
when he died.)
Their son, Jack Smith, was born in a house on the property of Andrew Lindsay Wheeler. It was a 2-
story house back behind the main house.
During the 1930 census, the family was living in Mount Clemons Michigan, near Detroit. He was
working there reupholstering and repairing Victorian furntiure and returned to Alabama just before
the birth of his daughter, Linda. On April 24, 1930, he lived in Clinton Township, Mount Clemons,
at 25 Church Street, with Ruby, Guy and Jack. There were two boarders in the house, whose
names appear to be Verna Leonardson(born in Michigan) and Charles Simmons (born in Illinois).
The family is paying $30 a month for rent. Emmett says his father was born in Georgia and Ruby
says her mother was born in Missouri according to the census takers, both things that we believe
26
are not true. The lodgers are a waitress at a hotel and a laborer doing odd jobs. Emmett lists
himself as a a carpenter in a cabinet shop.
His daughter says: He always planted a few crops because farming was in his blood. They had 39
acres in Alabama, but a lot of it was woods (long-term leases from Tennessee Coal and Iron
company). He would have corn, sweet potatoes and soy beans, in a time when people were not
growing soy beans. He fed them to the animals, but said that people would be eating them before
long. He had a kitchen garden too. He worked in a defense plant in Alabama, during World War II.
His daughter does not know what he did because they didn't talk about what they did at the plant.
She thinks he made powder for explosives. His son thinks he was working on setting the plant up
rather than working in the plant. He learned how to cut hair in the Army, so on Sunday afternoons
their front porch was a barber shop. Everyone who was working 6 days a week in the defense
plants during the war would get their hair cut because that was their only day off. When it became
popular for women to bob their hair, he cut his wife's hair. The relationship with her father was
cooler after that, and he may have never forgiven Emmett for cutting Ruby's hair.
His son says: My dad worked in the Edgewater coal mine as a brick mason building block and
brick walls for air and ventilation control and motor shops in the mine for part of the war years. He
worked as a saw filer, sharpening saws while building a powder plant for DUPONT co. in Sylacaga,
Al. Tthey produced powder for dynamite and all kinds of explosives ( I think the full name was
I. E. Dupont and De mours co. I may not have it spelled right ). Both before and after the war he
worked as a contractor building houses.
He says his dad was a man of sometimes strong opinions and did not care what other people
thought, a trait which arguably carried down in the famly. At church one time the discussion came
up among a small group about why some person did not come to church. Someone in the group
mentioned that this person just did not have a suit to wear and felt out of place .My dad very quickly
answered "who is going to church, the person or the clothes ? If the clothes are going you can just
put them in a paper sack and send them." After more discussion about being too poor to own a
suit my dad suggested that the group start wearing KHAKI pants and any kind of clean shirt and
forget the tie. The next Sunday he showed up in khaki pants. He was the only one but he
continued to do that. He did not believe that clothes make the man. I am afraid that I have to
agree. He worked at the powder plant as a carpenter-- saw filer while building the plant. he never
worked in the plant after it went into production
His son also says his dad had 2 separate 40 acre, adjoining leases with 40 acres in cultivation, the
rest was in woods and pasture. He believed in a good garden He liked to go to church and tell
people "I have plenty of garden vegetables, Come on over and help yourself " then when we got
home he would tell me to go pick some and bring it to the house so they won't be tromping around
in the garden (some of them didn't know how to pick and would destroy more than they picked).
From the 6th grade on I got out of school at 1:00 and came hom, ,hooked up the mule(s) and
plowed until he came home to take over the plowing and I would go in and fix the mules feed
sometimes milk the cow and then do my homework (what part of it I ever done) I think the main
reason for some of the farming was to keep me out of trouble - - - It worked. I came in one day
and told him I wanted to go to a specific ball game.He wasn't in the best mood that day He said "
I've got your d- - - ball game there is a team of mules and 40 acres and if that runs out I will lease
some more" well that fall we bought a used tractor and I learned to drive it pretty good, The 40
acres ran out, I had plowed it over and over..My dad always tried to do what he said he would do
so he leased 5 acres - - -5 miles from home I plowed that and planted it in soybeans, I cut and
raked it and he gave it away because it had NUT grass in it and he,didn't want to contaminate our
place with it. But I never got into trouble I didn't have time. Of all the farming we done , I sold 1
half wagon load of watermelons..Of the rest, we had what we used and gave away more than we
used I can't remember ever selling anything more. ---He first leased the front 40 acres that he had
helped uncle Hugh Nicholson clear the trees off of it I can remember some of the trees were oaks
over 2 feet in diameter. the first lease was before my sister Linda was born The second lease was
an adjoining 40 acres that uncle Dick Wheeler *(Granny Caldwell's brother ) had leased for years
and he gave up the lease. since we had the front 40 the company ( T. C I ) let us have it.There was
some mine cracks--big cracks in the ground varying in size some4--6 ft. wide and 40--50 ft long
open 4 to 8 ft deep ( WE had a mule fall into one once and we had to dig her out ) We filled them
and watched them and farmed right over them. Occasionally one would open up and we would
have to fill it again some of the cracks are there now in among the houses that have been built in
my field.

iv. HAROLD WAYNE CALDWELL, b. 10 Sep 1907, Birmingham, Alabama; d. 10 Mar 1930, Pensacola,
Escambia, Florida.
Notes for HAROLD WAYNE CALDWELL:
In an email dated May 16, 2005, Ben Caldwell says:
The subject came up about Harold Wain Caldwell wanting to fly. I found a log book for him
amoung my dad's log books. It showed him as an AMM2c which is an Aviation Machinist Mate
second class. That is an aircraft mechanic. The log book shows him flying as a crew member.
The first entry is January 9, 1927, but at least one previous page is missing, so I don't know exactly
when he started. The last entry is for August 9, 1928. He was stationed aboard the USS
Marblehead (CL-12), a light cruiser. During the time he was aboard her, she saw service in
Nicaragua, Pearl Harbor, and Shanghai, China.
In the log book is a document from the naval air station at Pensacola, Florida, dated September 10,
1928 designating him a student pilot. I have attached a copy of that document. (This document will
be on the grannyandpopacaldwell.com website.) He must have been transferred from the USS
28
Marblehead to Pensacola to start flight school. He died March 10, 1930. There are no entries in
his log book for the last 19 months of his life. I can only assume that he had another log book and
was a student pilot at Pensacola during that time. That is plenty of time for him to have finished
flight school and become a full fledged pilot.
The story I heard about his death was that he was in a boat that capsized. He swam to shore, but
went back to try to save one of his buddies and they both drowned.

but they did not go together. He trained at Pensacola, Florida. He was a navigator and pilot. After
World War II, some smart aleck young medic did his annual physical and decided he had asthma,
so he had to go on a desk job. He finished his Navy career in Pensacola. He retired as a

little chance of making it given his lack of education. He was an Ensign at the beginning of World
War II. He was promoted during the war. At the end of the war, Congress voted to allow some of
them to keep their rank and he was allowed to. He finished his Navy career in Pensacola. He

MCKENZIE, Private; b. Private.
Notes for VIRGINIA ALICE CALDWELL:
In the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, there was a stone in the Caldwell lot. Cars kept missing the curve
and hitting the stone. So, Alice bought a really big stone so that cars could not damage it. It
seems to be working.
Alice always had a beautiful garden. When her children were grown up, she went to work at
Auburn University. She first took classes to learn to be a secretary. Eventually, when David was in
college, she worked as an administrative assistant to the Dean of the school of agriculture. She
continued in that job until she retired. She used to take rocks to the elementary school and talk to
the children about the different rocks in her collection. She sewed and made all of her children's
clothes while they were growing up. I am sure they saw this as a mixed blessing.
Her son Craig is a geologist. He sent her rocks from everywhere he went, to add to her rock
collection.
Alyce and Russell lived in Lanette, Alabama, until their children started going to college. Then they
moved to Auburn because it was cheaper to move there than it was to have their children living at
the college.
