I have prepared this document from research and findings from the Internet as well as a few other sources. Please bear in mind that the contents are not the gospel, but rather popular consensus from different sources.
I have compiled data on my direct bloodline, from Joseph Bogle, Sr., 1700, Scotland, through the present. I have also added some interesting information about some of my cousins.
I hope that you find this enjoyable as well as informative.
Enjoy,
Danny Joe Bogle
According to the Scottish language, the word “bogle” means ghost, hobgoblin, phantom, or scarecrow.
One legend has it that the Bogle family was originally part of the McGregor clan, and somehow became divided in conflict. The Bogles retreated to the hills, and would occasionally descend into the McGregor villages to pillage and plunder. The Bogles would use the cover of darkness and would slip away, like ghosts in the night, without being caught. The McGregor people began to call these others “Bogles”.
It is believed that the name was originally derived from the area called “Bowgyhill”, in Monkland, Lanarkshire, near Glasgow, Scotland.
Different spellings of the name “Bogle” would include Bogyll, Bogill, Bogyl, Bogill, and Bogile.
